Introduction to the Glacier View Fire Department
To become a member of the
Glacier View Fire Department, it is preferred that you are a homeowner in the district
and have lived in the district for at least a year.
You must fill out an application and an interview will be set up with the
Officer group. Upon acceptance, you
will become a probationary member until you acquire the experience and training
to be voted in as a full member, usually 3 to 6 months.
As a probationary member, you will attend trainings, respond to calls and
work with the officers and experienced members to become familiar with the operations
and the equipment of the fire department.
When you are first accepted
on the department, you will be given a handbook containing the department By-laws
and Standard Operating Procedures which the department follows when on calls or
performing other activities. This is
a valuable resource to give you insight into the workings of the fire department
and what is expected of members.
Members are expected to
attend a minimum of 36 hours of training per year within the regularly scheduled
trainings held by the department. Fire
trainings are held on the second Tuesday evening of each month, and the last Saturday
morning of each month. There is also
a Medical training held the third Monday of each month, and all members are welcome
to attend. This is particularly encouraged
if you are interested in becoming an EMT, and also very helpful when you go on medical
runs, which average 80% of our calls.
Firefighters need to respond to the medical and MVA calls, as many of the jobs on
those calls are not performed by the medical people.
The medical personnel take care of the patients and the firefighters take
care of all other aspects of the call.
There also are opportunities to attend trainings and conferences held elsewhere
in the state; these are paid for by the department when you are a regular member.
A new member is expected
to attend trainings regularly, get with the Training Officer and/or experienced
firefighters to learn the engines and to attend all calls when possible.
You are responsible for getting your training and working with officers to
make sure you are performing up to expectations.
Members are expected to
respond to 40% of the calls per year.
The fire department has between 70 to 100 calls per year, this includes fire, medical,
and motor vehicle accident (MVA) calls.
You will be assigned clothing,
consisting of bunker gear for structure fire fighting and wild land clothing and
fire packs. You also will be assigned
communication equipment, such as a pager and radio, for the duties you will be performing. It is your responsibility to keep your
equipment and clothing in good repair and clean.
The department stocks batteries for pagers and radios, and maintains supplies
for cleaning clothing at the station.
You will have a mailbox in the station where notices, paperwork, etc., are placed
to keep you updated.

Logistics Group
What is the logistics group?
The logistics group provides
many types of auxiliary services for the fire department.
The group meets every fourth Wednesday of the month at the fire station at
7:00 PM.
What do Logistics members
do?
Logistics Group members
are individuals who want to assist the fire department, but do not directly fight
fire or provide patient care. Logistics
members can function as communications liaisons, food and drink providers, vehicle
and station maintenance personnel, help with trainings, traffic control on large
MVA incidents, lead-ins for outside agencies coming to the area on fire incidents,
basically any activity that the firefighters would have to do other than responding
to the calls.
Where do I fit in the Logistics
group?
This primarily depends on
how much you want to participate! Members
are activated with a pager or phone call.
You may be called to help clean hoses and vehicles after a fire to get vehicles
ready for the next response. You may
also be called to provide food and drink for firefighters on the line, provide lead-ins
during a fire or major medical event or bring responders from other agencies into
the area, or act as training participants for some of the fire/medical trainings. The Logistics group also helps on the
special activities the department does, such as open house.
Will I be asked to do something
I’m not comfortable with or that I can’t physically accomplish?
No.
Logistics group members do not respond to the scene during initial firefighting
or
EMS
operations except for lead-ins. Logistic
members are never intentionally put in dangerous situations.
Activities near a fire scene will be limited to delivering equipment, food
and drink to the staging areas. Occasionally
support members may be called to provide traffic control to a large accident or
fire scene.
How do I get involved?
Logistics group members
are required to complete an application like any department member.
This application may include a background check and driver’s license check. All Logistics group members are encouraged
to attend regular fire department trainings when they wish.
